Meta AI
Meta's AI effort, from the FAIR research lab to the 2025 Meta Superintelligence Labs division; long the standard-bearer for open-weight models before shifting toward closed releases.
Meta AI covers the artificial-intelligence work of Facebook's parent company, from the Fundamental AI Research lab (FAIR) that Yann LeCun founded in 2013 to the Meta Superintelligence Labs division created in 2025. For several years its distinctive strategy was openness: the Llama models were released as downloadable open weights, which made them the basis of much independent research and many products. That approach came under strain after Llama 4 was poorly received in 2025, prompting Mark Zuckerberg to restructure the effort around Alexandr Wang — brought in through a $14.3bn investment in Scale AI — and, in 2026, to release Muse Spark as a closed, proprietary model, a reversal that coincided with LeCun's departure. Meta's standing at the frontier is contested: independent trackers placed its 2026 flagship behind the leading models from Google, OpenAI and Anthropic.
