NVIDIA
The chip designer whose GPUs became the default hardware for training and running large AI models, making it the biggest financial beneficiary of the boom.
Nvidia is the American chip designer, founded in 1993, whose graphics processors became the essential hardware for training and running large AI models — a position that turned it into the biggest financial beneficiary of the AI boom. Demand for its accelerators drove it in 2025 to become the first company worth $4tn and then $5tn, making it by a wide margin the most valuable listed company in the world. Its business sits at the centre of two live disputes: US restrictions on selling advanced chips to China, which have repeatedly forced it to write down sales, and a debate over whether the sector's spending reflects genuine end-user demand or capital circulating among a few interdependent firms — a concern sharpened by Nvidia's own multi-billion-dollar investments in customers such as OpenAI. Its stock has also proved sensitive to that story, losing a record amount of market value in a single day in early 2025 after the Chinese model DeepSeek suggested frontier AI might be built more cheaply.
