Amazon's role in AI runs mainly through its cloud arm, AWS, which sells AI infrastructure and, since 2023, has been the largest financial backer of Anthropic. It has committed to invest up to roughly $30bn in the lab and to supply it with vast amounts of computing power — an expanded 2026 deal covers up to five gigawatts of capacity running on Amazon's own Trainium chips, its in-house alternative to Nvidia's GPUs. Through its Bedrock service AWS also resells models from Anthropic and others to business customers, positioning itself as a neutral supplier of AI capacity rather than a maker of frontier models of its own. That strategy has meant heavy spending: Amazon lifted its 2026 capital-expenditure guidance to around $200bn, most of it for AWS data centres.
