Inflection AI was founded in 2022 by the LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman together with Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan, both formerly of DeepMind, to build a personal-AI companion called Pi — a chatbot pitched as a supportive confidant rather than a search or productivity tool. It raised more than a billion dollars and set itself up as a public benefit corporation, but struggled to find a durable place against the general-purpose assistants from OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. In March 2024 Microsoft hired Suleyman and most of Inflection's staff and licensed its technology for a reported $650 million, leaving the company itself standing as a nominally independent enterprise business — the case that came to define the "reverse acquihire", a pattern of absorbing a start-up's people and technology without a formal acquisition or its regulatory scrutiny.
