Inflection AI named Sean White, formerly Mozilla’s chief technology officer, as chief executive and announced a new leadership team, two months after Microsoft hired co-founder Mustafa Suleyman and most of the company’s technical staff to run a new consumer AI division, without formally acquiring Inflection.

The announcement recast the company’s strategy around enterprise customers rather than the consumer chatbot Pi that had defined its first two years. White said Inflection would offer businesses access to Pi’s underlying “emotional AI” style through an API, letting organisations deploy custom-branded assistants rather than competing head-on with the general-purpose chatbots Pi had been built to rival.

The pivot followed a now-familiar pattern for a well-funded lab that lost its founding team and much of its research talent to a larger partner in exchange for a licensing payment rather than a sale: rather than closing, Inflection retooled around a narrower, less capital-intensive business built on the technology it retained, leaving the frontier-model ambitions that had defined its 2023 fundraising to the team that had departed for Microsoft.
