Mistral AI
Europe's leading independent lab, known for shipping capable open-weight models under permissive licences alongside its Le Chat assistant.
Mistral AI is a Paris-based lab founded in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Timothée Lacroix and Guillaume Lample, researchers who had worked on large models at Google DeepMind and Meta, and it raised what was then the largest seed round in European tech history on their reputations alone. It made its name by releasing capable open-weight models — starting with Mistral 7B and Mixtral, through to the Mistral 3 family — under permissive licences, alongside its Le Chat assistant. That has left it, by 2026, as the most prominent Western lab still shipping frontier-adjacent open weights while OpenAI, Anthropic and Google keep their flagship models closed, and as Europe's leading candidate for a home-grown competitor to the American labs, backed by investors including the chip-equipment maker ASML.
