Mistral AI relaunched Le Chat, its consumer chatbot, adding a set of features aimed at closing the gap with ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude rather than differentiating on a single capability. The update bundled in image generation using Black Forest Labs’ Flux Ultra model, web search drawing on news and social media sources, a “Canvas” mode for building documents and simple app mockups collaboratively with the model, and a code interpreter for running code in a sandboxed environment.

Mistral also promoted a feature it called Flash Answers, claiming response generation of up to roughly 1,000 words per second on supported queries, positioning it as faster than rival assistants — a marketing figure rather than an independently benchmarked one. The relaunch kept a free tier with the core feature set and introduced a $14.99-a-month Pro tier with expanded limits, alongside team and enterprise options; a private-preview enterprise deployment was also announced.

The relaunch mattered less for any individual feature than as a signal of Mistral’s strategy: rather than compete primarily on frontier model benchmarks, where it trailed the largest US and Chinese labs, the company built a consumer product that matched the feature set users had come to expect from ChatGPT — search grounding, image generation and document tools in one interface — while continuing to sell its underlying models separately through an API business.
