Udio is an AI music-generation platform built by five former Google DeepMind researchers and launched in 2024, backed by Andreessen Horowitz and with musicians including will.i.am among its early advisers. It arrived weeks after a strong release from Suno, and the two quickly became the leading services for generating songs from text prompts — and, within months, joint targets of copyright suits from the major record labels. Udio argued that musical styles cannot be owned and that its system generates new compositions rather than copying specific recordings. In October 2025 Universal Music settled its suit and agreed to build a jointly owned, licensed music platform with Udio for 2026; in the meantime Udio's existing service was constrained — downloads removed, filtering added — while Sony's separate claims remained active.
