Demis Hassabis
Demis Hassabis co-founded DeepMind, the London lab Google bought in 2014, and led it — later merged with Google Brain as Google DeepMind — through work that included AlphaFold, for which he shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He built a reputation for pairing scientific ambition with public caution about advanced AI, and in mid-2026 proposed a FINRA-style US body to vet frontier models, a plan that drew rare cross-industry praise. In August 2026 he stepped back from running the lab day to day, becoming its chairman and Alphabet's chief scientist while continuing to lead the drug-discovery spin-off Isomorphic Labs. He remains one of the field's most senior figures.
