OpenAI acquired TBPN, a daily live tech-and-business talk show hosted by former founders John Coogan and Jordi Hays, marking the company’s first purchase of a media outlet. TBPN airs for roughly three hours a day on YouTube and X and had built a reputation as an industry gathering point, with guests including Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, Marc Benioff and Sam Altman himself.
Neither company disclosed financial terms, though reporting placed the deal in the low hundreds of millions of dollars. OpenAI said the show would keep operating under its existing brand and hosts rather than being absorbed into OpenAI’s own output, and would sit within the company’s “strategy org,” reporting to chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane rather than to a product or communications team.
The purchase drew attention less for its size than for what it signalled about OpenAI’s ambitions beyond model development: a frontier AI lab buying a media property that covers the AI industry itself, including OpenAI’s own rivals and controversies. Commentary was sceptical of the strategic logic, with one report describing the move as part of an acquisition pattern that seemed to be “chasing vibes” rather than following an obvious product roadmap. It followed a broader trend of OpenAI diversifying into deals — from cloud capacity to consumer hardware to, now, media — that sat outside its core business of building and selling models.
