OpenAI published “The State of Enterprise AI,” a report drawing on usage data from more than a million business customers and a survey of 9,000 workers across roughly 100 enterprises, restating that ChatGPT had passed 800 million weekly users — the same figure Sam Altman had first disclosed at DevDay two months earlier, rather than a new milestone. The company also reported that weekly messages sent through ChatGPT Enterprise had grown eightfold year over year, and that average reasoning-token consumption per organisation was up roughly 320-fold over the previous twelve months.
On the productivity side, OpenAI said 75% of surveyed employees reported that AI improved their speed or quality of work, with users saving an average of 40 to 60 minutes a day and the heaviest users exceeding ten hours a week. The report framed 2025 as the year enterprise adoption moved past experimentation, arguing that the largest gains accrued to organisations that had embedded AI into core workflows rather than treating it as an add-on tool, while others had not moved beyond basic use.
As with prior user-count disclosures, the figures were self-reported and not independently audited, and the report’s productivity claims rested on employee self-assessment rather than measured output. The 800-million figure nonetheless became the headline reference point for ChatGPT’s scale through the rest of the year, cited in subsequent coverage of OpenAI’s competitive position against Google’s Gemini app and in the company’s own framing of why it needed to keep shipping model updates at pace.
