TSMC — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company — is the world's largest contract chipmaker, founded in 1987 by Morris Chang, which invented the model of manufacturing chips that other companies design. In the AI era that has made it a choke point: the leading-edge processors sold by Nvidia, Apple, AMD and Broadcom are almost all fabricated in its Taiwan plants, giving it a dominant share of advanced foundry work. Its central position also ties it to the geopolitics of Taiwan and to US–China export controls, and it has been building new fabs in the United States, Japan and Germany partly in response.
