Shanghai AI Laboratory
A government-backed research institute developing the open-source InternLM models and OpenGVLab vision projects.
Shanghai AI Laboratory is a government-backed research institute, inaugurated in 2020, that develops the open-source InternLM ("Intern") family of models and the OpenGVLab computer-vision projects. Its releases are typically open-weight and research-oriented, spanning language, multimodal and, more recently, scientific models aimed at what it calls AI for Science. Led since 2024 by Zhou Bowen, following the death of founding director Tang Xiaoou, it functions as an academic institution rather than a commercial developer, and is among the more prolific sources of openly released Chinese models.
