A popular open-source tool for running open-weight models locally on a personal computer.
Ollama is a US company behind the open-source tool of the same name, which lets people download and run open-weight AI models on their own computers, wrapping the work of serving a model behind a single command. Released in 2023 by Jeffrey Morgan and Michael Chiang — who had earlier worked on the container tool Docker — it became one of the most popular ways for developers to run models such as Meta's Llama and other open releases locally rather than calling a cloud API. The company said the tool had grown to nearly nine million monthly developers by 2026, when it raised a $65m Series B led by Theory Ventures, taking its total funding to about $88m.
