Author of the 2019 OECD AI Principles and host of the OECD.AI policy observatory; sets non-binding international standards for trustworthy AI.

The OECD's role in AI is standard-setting and measurement rather than regulation. In May 2019 it adopted the Recommendation of the Council on Artificial Intelligence — the OECD AI Principles — described as the first intergovernmental standard on AI, later drawn on for the G20's principles and much national policy. It runs the OECD.AI Policy Observatory, launched in 2020, which tracks national AI policies, incidents and compute trends, and in 2024 it combined efforts with the Global Partnership on AI and took on monitoring the G7's code of conduct. Its instruments are non-binding but widely adopted as a shared vocabulary for "trustworthy AI".
