The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is one of the oldest and most influential homes of artificial-intelligence research, with an AI Laboratory dating to 1959. Since 2003 much of that work has run through the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), MIT's largest research lab, spanning machine learning, robotics, vision, natural language and systems; since 2019 it has sat within the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing. As a university rather than a company, MIT's role in the recent AI story is less about shipping models than about producing the methods, benchmarks and researchers who go on to lead labs across the field.
