Liquid AI
Efficient, on-device foundation models based on "liquid neural networks", a non-transformer design spun out of MIT.
Liquid AI is a US company spun out of MIT's CSAIL lab in 2023, built around "liquid neural networks" — a model design its founders derived from the nervous system of the roundworm C. elegans and pitch as more efficient than the transformer. Rather than chase the largest models, it builds compact foundation models aimed at running on phones, laptops and other devices instead of in data centres. It raised a $250m Series A led by AMD Ventures at a reported $2.35bn valuation in December 2024, positioning itself in the market for efficient, on-device AI.
