Cursor is an AI-assisted code editor, made by a company called Anysphere that four MIT students founded in 2022. Built as a fork of Microsoft's Visual Studio Code with AI woven through the whole editing experience, it started as a barely noticed side project in 2023 and grew largely by word of mouth into one of the fastest-growing software products by revenue, which the company said passed $1 billion on an annualised basis by late 2025. It became a reference case for how quickly an AI-native developer tool could scale once language models were good enough for real coding work rather than autocomplete alone. Its rise culminated in a $29.3 billion valuation in November 2025 and, in June 2026, an agreement to be acquired by SpaceX for $60 billion — a deal that folded it into the combined SpaceX-xAI group.
