Anthropic and the Gates Foundation announced a four-year, $200 million partnership combining grant funding, Claude usage credits and technical support, aimed at applying AI to global health, education and economic mobility. Anthropic described the effort as extending the benefits of AI “in areas where markets alone will not.”
The largest component targeted global health and life sciences, addressing gaps in care that the companies said affected roughly 4.6 billion people living in low- and middle-income countries, including work on vaccine and therapy development, health data analytics for governments, and research on diseases such as polio, HPV and pre-eclampsia. The education component covered co-developing tutoring, career-guidance and literacy tools for K-12 students in the United States, sub-Saharan Africa and India, while the economic-mobility strand supported agricultural productivity work for smallholder farmers and workforce tools including portable skill records for US workers.
Implementation ran through Anthropic’s Beneficial Deployments team working alongside Gates Foundation partners worldwide. The partnership was one of a series of philanthropic and public-interest commitments frontier labs made through 2026 alongside their commercial expansion, though as with comparable pledges from other companies, the figures represented a mix of cash, in-kind compute credits and staff time rather than a straightforward cash grant.
