Anthropic pledges Claude will remain ad-free

Anthropic published a pledge that Claude would not carry advertising, in a post titled “Claude is a space to think.” The company said there would be no sponsored links placed next to conversations, no advertiser influence on the model’s responses, and no unsolicited third-party product placement, adding that “should we need to revisit this approach, we’ll be transparent about our reasons for doing so.”
Anthropic argued that an advertising-funded model would create structural incentives to optimise for engagement and time spent rather than for usefulness, noting that the most helpful response to a user is often a short one that ends the conversation rather than prolongs it — the opposite of what an ad-supported product would reward. The company distinguished Claude’s typical use cases, such as software engineering and working through difficult problems, from the more casual browsing contexts where it said advertising was less “incongruous.”
The pledge followed OpenAI’s announcement of its approach to advertising in ChatGPT earlier in the year, and preceded OpenAI’s start of ad testing within the ChatGPT product. Coverage of the announcement noted that Anthropic used the contrast for marketing purposes, including in advertising of its own that referenced ChatGPT’s move toward ads. As a stated commitment rather than a structural or legal constraint, the pledge left open the possibility that Anthropic’s position could change if its business needs did.
