OpenAI launches Prism

OpenAI launched Prism, a free workspace built around GPT-5.2 for writing, revising and collaborating on scientific papers — helping generate hypotheses, analyse data, manage citations and convert hand-drawn sketches into LaTeX. The product was built on Crixet, a cloud-based LaTeX platform OpenAI had quietly acquired and rebuilt around GPT-5.2.

Prism is free for anyone with a personal ChatGPT account, with unlimited projects and collaborators; OpenAI said a rollout to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Education accounts would follow, with more advanced capabilities arriving later through paid plans. Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s vice president of science, told reporters at the launch that “I think 2026 will be for AI and science what 2025 was for AI and software engineering” — framing Prism as the opening move in a push into scientific research comparable to the coding-assistant products OpenAI and its competitors had built out the previous year.

The launch extended a broader pattern of AI labs building purpose-built products around a general model rather than leaving scientists to use a chat interface directly, following similar science- and research-oriented tools from other developers. As with those products, Prism’s value depends on how reliably GPT-5.2 avoids fabricating citations or misstating results in a domain where errors are costly and hard to catch — a question OpenAI’s launch materials did not address in detail.
