ByteDance releases Doubao 1.6 model

ByteDance’s cloud unit Volcano Engine released Doubao Seed 1.6, an update to the model line underlying its consumer Doubao assistant, at the company’s FORCE conference in Beijing. The release shipped as three variants — Doubao-Seed-1.6, a “thinking” version for extended reasoning, and a lighter “flash” model — letting developers trade reasoning depth against latency and cost within a single model family.

The launch came alongside Seedance 1.0 pro, a video-generation model, and upgrades to Volcano Engine’s agent-development and cloud-native tooling, positioning the release as an infrastructure update for ByteDance’s enterprise AI customers as much as a consumer model refresh. Coverage of the launch reported a substantial price cut against the prior Doubao generation, consistent with Volcano Engine’s broader strategy of competing on cost in China’s crowded large-model market, where Alibaba’s Qwen, DeepSeek, Moonshot and Zhipu all update flagship models on a similar cadence.

Doubao had been ByteDance’s fastest-growing AI product, and the 1.6 update extended a pattern common among Chinese labs in 2025: frequent, incremental model releases tied to price competition rather than a single headline capability jump. The model received little coverage outside Chinese and specialist trade press at launch.
