ByteDance unveiled Doubao-Seed-2.0, a family of four models: three general-purpose “agent” models — Pro, Lite and Mini — and a separate Code model, all released the same day. Caixin Global reported ByteDance describing the architecture as “systematically optimized for large-scale production environments,” with improved handling of “intricate, real-world assignments” and agentic workflows. Pro was pitched at deep reasoning and long-chain tasks, Lite at broad capability with lower cost than the previous Doubao 1.8 generation, and Mini at low latency and high concurrency for production deployment.

The launch came as ByteDance’s Doubao consumer app faced fresh competition in China’s crowded AI-assistant market: on the day of the announcement, Ant Group’s affiliate and Alibaba’s assistant topped China’s iOS free download charts, with Doubao in third place, even though Caixin cited market data putting Doubao ahead on weekly active users — 155 million in December 2025, against roughly 20.8 million for Tencent’s Yuanbao.

The release fit a pattern among Chinese frontier labs of shipping tiered model families — a flagship reasoning model, a cheaper general-purpose variant, and a specialised coding model — aimed as much at enterprise and developer adoption as at benchmark leadership, at a point when Doubao’s usage lead in China’s consumer market was narrowing.
