Vector Institute
Toronto deep-learning research institute, part of Canada's national AI strategy, with roots in Geoffrey Hinton's Toronto group.
The Vector Institute is a non-profit artificial-intelligence research institute in Toronto, launched in 2017 as part of Canada's national AI strategy and with roots in the deep-learning group around Geoffrey Hinton, who serves as its chief scientific adviser. It concentrates on machine learning and deep learning, working alongside the University of Toronto and partner companies to fund research, train talent and support Canadian AI firms. Its inaugural research director was Richard Zemel, and since 2025 it has been led by president and chief executive Glenda Crisp; it is one of three national centres — with Mila in Montreal and Amii in Edmonton — that anchor Canada's publicly funded AI research.
