The world's largest music label; lead plaintiff against AI song generators Suno and Udio, and later Udio's partner in a licensed AI-music platform.
Universal Music Group is the world's largest recorded-music company, home to labels including Interscope, Def Jam and Capitol and to a catalogue that made it a lead plaintiff as generative audio arrived. In 2024 UMG, with Sony Music and Warner Music, sued the AI song generators Suno and Udio in cases coordinated by the RIAA, alleging mass copyright infringement. In October 2025 it changed course, settling with Udio and agreeing to build a licensed AI-music platform together while continuing its case against Suno — a pivot from litigation toward paid licensing that reshaped the music industry's stance on AI. (It should not be confused with Universal Pictures, the film studio in the Midjourney suit; the two share the "Universal" name but are unrelated companies.)
