RAND
A long-established US non-profit research institution whose AI work spans frontier-model governance, national security, autonomous weapons and the economics of automation.
RAND is one of the oldest research institutions in the United States, incorporated as a non-profit in 1948 after growing out of a US Air Force project, and long a fixture of American defence and public-policy analysis. Its AI work sits at the intersection of the two, examining frontier-model governance, the national-security implications of advanced AI, autonomous weapons, and the effects of automation on the economy and workforce; it houses a dedicated centre, RAND CAST, for the purpose. Since July 2022 it has been led by Jason Matheny, previously the founding director of Georgetown's CSET and a White House technology-policy official, which has sharpened its focus on emerging technology. Its output is reports and testimony rather than products, and its influence rests on how policymakers and the military use that analysis.
