PauseAI is an international grassroots movement that calls for a halt to the development of frontier AI systems until, it argues, they can be shown to be safe and kept under democratic control. It was founded in Utrecht in May 2023 by the software entrepreneur Joep Meindertsma and has since organised protests and lobbying across more than a dozen countries, including actions outside AI labs and at national parliaments. It operates on a small budget and is one of the most visible organisations arguing for a development pause rather than regulation alone.
