News Corp is Rupert Murdoch's news and publishing company — owner of the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, and Britain's Times and Sunday Times — formed in 2013 when the older News Corporation split its publishing arm from its film and television business. In this record it stands out as a rightsholder that chose to license rather than litigate: in May 2024 it signed a multi-year deal with OpenAI, reported to be worth more than $250m over five years, to bring its journalism into ChatGPT. Its Dow Jones unit has been more combative, suing Perplexity in October 2024 over alleged copying — making the company a party on both sides of the industry's licence-or-sue divide.
