iFlytek

Speech technology and the Spark (Xinghuo) large-model family, from a long-established, partly state-owned Chinese AI firm.

2 entries · May 2023 – October 2023

iFlytek is a partly state-owned Chinese company, founded in 1999 in Hefei by Liu Qingfeng and fellow graduates of the University of Science and Technology of China, that became the country's dominant supplier of speech recognition, speech synthesis and machine translation. In the language-model era it has built the Spark (Xinghuo) family of models, aimed heavily at education, healthcare and government customers and marketed as running on domestic computing hardware. Unlike the newer AI startups it is a long-established, publicly listed firm, and its work has drawn attention both for that home-grown compute stack and for its close ties to the Chinese state.
