The Walt Disney Company is one of the largest entertainment conglomerates, whose vast library of copyrighted characters put it at the centre of the studios' fight with AI image generators. In June 2025 Disney and Universal Pictures jointly sued Midjourney, the first major-studio copyright suit against an AI company, alleging its tool reproduced protected characters from Star Wars, The Simpsons and other franchises. Months later Disney reached a content agreement with OpenAI covering the Sora video app, placing it, like several rightsholders in this record, on both sides of the litigate-or-license line.
