Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, is a US university with an unusually deep record in artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics. Its School of Computer Science, established in 1988, houses the Robotics Institute — founded in 1979 as the first academic department in the world devoted to robotics — and a Machine Learning Department created in 2006, described as the first of its kind. As a university, its influence in the recent AI period runs through the methods it produces and the researchers it trains rather than through products, and it is consistently ranked among the top handful of institutions for AI and computer science.
