Claude is the family of AI assistants built by Anthropic, first released in 2023 and named after tiers — Haiku for the small models, Sonnet for the mid-range, and Opus for the largest. From Claude 3 in March 2024, when Opus briefly took the top of the headline benchmarks from GPT-4, the line built a particular reputation among software developers for coding and for long, multi-step "agentic" work. By 2026 Claude sits among the small group of frontier model families, and Anthropic has extended it above the Opus line into a more capable "Mythos" tier, some of which it has kept out of general release on safety grounds.
