Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence
A non-profit research institute known for the Wu Dao models and for open datasets and tools for Chinese AI research.
The Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, or BAAI, is a non-profit research institute set up in 2018 with backing from the Beijing municipal government and a coalition of Chinese universities and technology firms. It drew early attention with Wu Dao, a series of very large multimodal models — 2021's Wu Dao 2.0 was reported at 1.75 trillion parameters — and it has since released open models, datasets and tools used across Chinese AI research. As an academic-facing institute rather than a commercial lab, its role is to produce shared research and infrastructure for the wider field rather than consumer products.
