A critical AI-policy research institute focused on the concentration of power in the tech industry, algorithmic bias, labour and surveillance.
The AI Now Institute is a US research organisation, founded in 2017 by Kate Crawford and Meredith Whittaker and originally based at New York University, that studies the social implications of artificial intelligence with a focus on the concentration of power in the technology industry. It has published influential annual reports and work on algorithmic bias, labour, facial recognition and surveillance, and has argued for stronger regulation of the largest AI firms; it became fully independent in 2022 and says it declines corporate funding to protect its autonomy. Now led by executive directors Amba Kak and Sarah Myers West, it sits on the more critical, power-focused wing of the AI-policy debate, in contrast to the frontier-risk framing of some other groups.
