Gallup finds Americans growing more negative on AI as familiarity rises

Gallup reported that 39% of Americans said AI does more harm than good, up from 31% the previous year and close to the 40% recorded in 2023 — reversing two years of gradually improving sentiment. A slight majority, 52%, said AI does equal amounts of harm and good, while just 9% said it does more good than harm, down slightly from prior polling.
The shift was sharpest among younger adults: 47% of 18-to-29-year-olds said AI does more harm than good, up from 36% the year before and well above the 30% recorded in 2023 and 27% in 2024 — the group whose views had previously been the most favourable toward the technology. Gallup found the negative shift held across all age groups even as familiarity with AI kept rising, suggesting that greater exposure to the technology was not translating into greater comfort with it.
On jobs, Gallup found 79% of Americans expected AI to reduce the number of US jobs over the next decade, up from 73% a year earlier, with the increase again concentrated among younger adults. Gallup framed the overall pattern as evidence that public trust in AI was already low enough that further modest shifts in opinion could matter for how businesses approached deployment, even as the pace of enterprise adoption continued to accelerate.
