MiniMax releases M2.1 update

MiniMax said the open-weight update outperforms Claude Sonnet 4.5 on multilingual coding, approaching Claude Opus 4.5, and cut token consumption and latency.

MiniMax released M2.1, an update to the open-weight coding and agent model M2 it had open-sourced in October. Where M2 had been pitched on cost and accessibility, MiniMax positioned M2.1 as aimed at more complex real-world work: systematically improved support across languages including Rust, Java, Go, C++, Kotlin, Objective-C, TypeScript and JavaScript, stronger native Android and iOS development and 3D-interface comprehension, and better generalisation across third-party coding tools such as Claude Code, Cline, Kilo Code, RooCode and BlackBox. MiniMax also reported reduced token consumption and faster response times relative to M2.

On its own VIBE benchmark for full-stack application development, MiniMax reported an aggregate score of 88.6, with web development scoring 91.5 and Android development 89.7. The company said M2.1 outperformed Claude Sonnet 4.5 in multilingual coding scenarios and approached the performance of Claude Opus 4.5 — self-reported comparisons rather than independently verified results. As with M2, the model’s weights are published openly and available for local deployment via Hugging Face, with support across common inference frameworks including SGLang, vLLM and Transformers.
