Trump signs order on AI education for K-12 youth
Executive Order 14277 sets deadlines from 90 days to a year for a White House AI-education task force, a student AI challenge and teacher-training priorities.

President Trump signed Executive Order 14277, “Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education for American Youth,” establishing a White House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence Education chaired by the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, with representatives from the Departments of Agriculture, Labor, Energy and Education and the National Science Foundation, among other agencies.
The order set a stack of deadlines rather than new spending. Within 90 days the task force was to draft plans for a Presidential AI Challenge and inventory existing federal AI-education resources, and the Secretary of Education was to issue guidance on using existing grant funds for AI initiatives. Within 120 days, agencies were to prioritise AI in teacher-training programmes, the NSF was to prioritise AI in its education research funding, and the Labor Department was to expand AI-related apprenticeships. Within 180 days, K-12 classroom resources built through public-private partnerships were to be ready for use, and the Presidential AI Challenge itself was due within 12 months.
The order relied heavily on partnerships with industry, academic institutions and nonprofits to build the actual curricula and resources, rather than directing federal agencies to create them independently. It followed a pattern set elsewhere in the administration’s AI policy of using executive orders to set direction and deadlines for agencies while leaving implementation to be negotiated afterward, and it marked one of the more concrete efforts by the federal government to shape how AI is taught in American schools rather than only how it is regulated in industry.
