OpenAI announced its acquisition of Global Illumination, a small design and engineering studio, for an undisclosed sum — its first public acquisition since the company’s founding in 2015. Global Illumination had been founded in 2021 by Thomas Dimson, Taylor Gordon and Joey Flynn, engineers who had previously built products at Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Google, Pixar and Riot Games, and the studio had raised roughly $14 million in venture funding from investors including Benchmark and Paradigm.
The company’s best-known project was Biomes, an open-source sandbox multiplayer game in the style of Minecraft. Rather than continuing that work, OpenAI said the incoming team would join to work on “core products,” reported to include ChatGPT — coverage at the time read the deal as a talent acquisition rather than an interest in games, since OpenAI gave no indication it planned to enter game development.
The acquisition was small by later standards — OpenAI would go on to acquire much larger companies, including hardware and coding-tool businesses, in the years that followed — but it marked a shift from OpenAI as a pure research lab toward a company assembling product and design talent through M&A, a pattern that became routine as it scaled ChatGPT into a consumer product.
